In Ibiza during the month of May is a must to visit “Ibiza Medieval” (Ibiza’s Medieval Fair). The quarters of Dalt Vila and La Marina, from the 9th to the 11th of May, go back several centuries in time to the Middle Ages.
And its streets are filled with medieval style clothes, bird trainers, craftsmen, merchants, soaps, spices and great shows including music, dance, theater and juggling. A fascinating mix of colors and essences that takes us to another time and allows us to see the old town of Dalt Vila, declared as a World Heritage Site, with different eyes.
Anytime is good to go to the Medieval Fair. It takes place for three days, but if you want to avoid large crowds it is best to visit it, for example, at noon time. Besides crafts, shows, animals and spices at the fair we can find delicious food, so it’s better to go with an empty stomach, so you can taste all the typical foods from the medieval ages, from all types of cheeses to “Galician style” octopus, kebabs, Arab sweets, chocolates and delicious crepes, just to mention a few.
But “men doesn’t live on bread alone”, and the Medieval Fair offers many different shows. There’s the big opening event and then a busy schedule where we can enjoy street theater, medieval music and all kinds of dances and acrobatics. Also, there’s always a section dedicated to Ibizan crafts, where you can also see the traditional costumes of the island.
The best is to walk up to Dalt Vila, although another option is to take a bus which will drop you off at the Cathedral, from where you can go back down without tiring much your legs. It’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing, since the temperatures can be high.
UNESCO declared in 1999 as World Heritage sites the Acropolis of Dalt Vila (the old town), the Posidonia oceanica underwater meadows, the Phoenician-Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins and the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta. Since then, this fair takes place every year to celebrate the achievement for this distinction. An event enthusiastically celebrated both by residents and tourists and visited every year by more than 100,000 people.
